GardenLocal community gardensWe have created an organic community garden open to all community members to grow their own organic vegetables and flowers. We also added a new herb garden of medicinal and culinary herbs. Last winter we set up a large greenhouse that we plan to use for starting plants in the early spring. We offer summer internships to people interested in being part of this process and learning more about organic growing. See the WWOOF section below for details.

Honey Bear OrchardHoney Bear Orchard –apples and grapes
We are also in the process of restoring an heirloom orchard with over a hundred old-time apple trees. We have seven varieties of apples plus a small vineyard of four varieties of heirloom grapes. This year we expanded our variety of fruit trees by planting cherry, plum, pear, citrus and almond trees. Every fall we hold our annual Apple Fest, a fun day of apple picking, cider pressing and pie eating.

WWOOF Summer Intern Program
This year we became a WWOOF organization and welcomed summer interns to come work in our garden and orchard. WWOOF stands for World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms. Their website, http://www.wwoof.org/, lists organic farms, smallholdings and gardeners that welcome volunteer help at certain times. Volunteer helpers ("WWOOFers") choose the hosts that most interest them and make direct contact to arrange a stay. In 2009, we had over a dozen volunteers at different times, working on the gardens and orchard. Under the guidance of Ryan Lubbers, they made huge progress in creating our community gardens, a new herb garden, planting new fruit trees, innoculating mushroom logs and other projects. We are eager to have more WWOOFers back in 2010. If you are interested, feel free to contact us.

Community Gardens

What is a CSA? (community supported agriculture)

gardening

Community supported agriculture consists of a group of families and individuals who pledge support to a farm operation so that the farmland becomes the community's farm, with the growers and consumers providing mutual support and sharing the benefits of food production. Typically, members pledge in advance to purchase food for a season. In return, they receive shares in the farm's bounty throughout the growing season, as well as satisfaction gained from reconnecting to the land and participating directly in food production.

Health food stores/supermarkets in the area
